DIN1: Sat July 18

Wednesday, July 15, 2009

Newly launched, DIN1 is an irregular programme of sound-offs devoted to of sonic collage and repetitive error. The brainchild of photographer Dave Southwood, better known to beat-freaks by his alias Crockette, and journalist Sean O’Toole, who will be reprising his late 1990s moniker Electric Lipstick, the launch event takes place at Beaulah Bar, corner Somerset Road and Coburn Street, Greenpoint on Saturday, July 18.

The line-up includes a bunch of well-known Cape Town scene-sters as well as a guest slot by art dealer Warren Siebrits. Johannesburg-based Siebrits, whose extensive record collection was famously the subject of an article by Fred de Vries, has first-hand experience entertaining audiences: he opened for Schematic Record’s Richard Devine on a local visit and recently funded the release of a CD collecting the tape-only releases of legendary Joburg post-punk band Koos. The headline to Ivor Powell’s 1989 Weekly Mail write-up on Koos offers a useful clue on what to expect: “white noise and agonised jangle”.

Entry fee: R20

Yeah a 90s revival of arty has-beens. Electric Lipstick. Fun! Manual Dildo. Not fun!

Sean O'Toole as Electric Lipstick... that image is going to keep me warm thru the rest of winter.

Gig sounds like an awkward, sustained, involuntary kneck spasm. With coke in the bathrooms...
