Support Gerhard Marx

Wednesday, September 24, 2008

I'm all for this, even if I could have done without the biblical victim title. Support Gerhard Marx.

You are hereby invited to attend the david&GOLIATH auction to be held at The Bag Factory in Fordsburg, Johannesburg onThursday, 25 September 2008 at 19h00. Preview and auction registration will be possible from 17h00.

The relationship between the arts and commercial industry is one in which issues of creative ownership and copyright infringement is frequently contested. It is generally financially impossible for the individual artist to address these issues legally when faced with a corporate giant.

The david&GOLIATH initiative is aimed at creating a platform through which the arts can support the arts in protecting creative ownership. Prominent South African artists have generously sponsored artworks to be auctioned off at this fundraising event, which is proudly hosted by The Bag Factory. Funds raised at this event will be used to support the case of Gerhard Marx vs. Ireland Davenport and BMW due to occur in the High Court on the 9th of October 2008

Any further profits from this auction will enable the establishment of the david&GOLIATH trust, which will aim to financially support artists against copyright infringement and commercial exploitation.

According to the list, there seems to be a second Penny Siopis supporting Marx's cause. But a few months ago it would be all too easy to pass this off as a typo, but now who knows, since contemporary art students are into their name changing pranks, maybe, just maybe, there's a new Penny on the block.

What Ireland/Davenport did on behalf of BMW Corporation SA is wrong in a legal sense, but do you not think that Marx is something of a hypocrite when it comes to the massive amount of mileage he has actively sought out of this case and is continuing to do so with this auction? This proactive attention seeking, in a personal capacity, is also further complicated by the fact that the legal fees in this case are the responsibility of Warren Siebrits and not Gerhard Marx. If Marx and Siebrits have decided it's a viable proposition to sue the second largest automobile manufacturer in the country for punitive damages, when in fact this little incident has raised the profile of a quite mediocre artist quite considerably, then good luck to them, but this auction bullshit just stinks.

dear anonymous of 9:41 - your vocabulary is so much more convincing than your ideas that I wonder if the entire message isn't computer generated. Or the apparently rational, but entirely emotional, outpouring of a poisoned psyche? Is it failure or envy which fuels this bile?
Or are you sitting right now at a slick desk in BMW or Ireland Davenport offices? Just doing your duty. You dog!
