Ah what fun to dally about on Artheat in the middle of the night, with free internet supplied by a donor who must remain a mystery, most especially to themselves. If you can detect a strange turn of phrase going on here, it is not only due to the Kimberley Hotel, but also to the fact that I am trying to write a thesis and have therefore descended into an adolescent state during which I read a lot of Dickens.
The point I am trying to make is that there is an important seminar on Thursday which the whole world should attend. If you are free on a weekday it probably means you have a trust fund or are, like us, unemployed, in which case you will appreciate some lunch and should therefore rsvp on pgfunding@uct.ac.za.
The seminar has been organised by Stuart Bird, a Masters student of some repute, who clearly wants a little clarity on what the fuck we are all doing here, which is pretty much the subject of the seminar. His title is something similar to the famous painting by Gauguin, only it pertains to comtemporary art in South Africa and is consequently decidedly thornier than anything Gauguin had to deal with in his cossetted upper-middle-class colonial existence. Thus the title of Stuart's seminar is also thornier, although right now I can't remember what it is.
There will be a panel of geniuses who are thoroughly worth listening to: Linda Stupart, Andrew Lamprecht, Thembinkosi Goniwe and Kathryn Smith, and the chair will be the Hon Professor Malcolm Payne.
The venue is the Postgrad Centre on the upper campus of UCT, in the TB Davie Seminar Room. It'll be interesting, and it starts at 9 and ends at 3, so if by the end of this we don't know where we're going, I doubt we ever will.
