Tonight at AVA

Africa South opens at the AVA, Cape Town, on Monday 26 November 2007, 18h00. The opening speaker is Premesh Lalu (History Dept, University of the Western Cape).
Africa South features Tyrone Appollis, Omar Badsha, Lizette Chirrime Peter E. Clarke, Gerry Dixon, Garth Erasmus, Randolph Hartzenberg, David Hlongwane, Isaac Makeleni, Shepherd Mbanya, Mambakwedza Mutasa, Dathini Mzayiya, Ndikhumbule Ngqinambi, Ugochukwu-Smooth Nzewi, Sophie Peters, Mario Pissarra, Ayesha Price, Velile Soha, Stacey Stent Mandla Vanyaza, Donovan Ward, Ernestine White, and Luzamba Zemba.
Most artists produced new work for the exhibition, which has been curated by Mario Pissarra for the Africa South Art Initiative (ASAI). The curator will lead walkabouts every Saturday morning, from 11am.
Africa South was made possible through the generous support of the AVA Artreach Fund.
The exhibition closes on 14 December 2007

Why do people paint gloopy orange pots on hessian? Are they mad? It was already a caricature of crap when it was first invented about fifty years ago. And precisely what is it trying to say about either art or Africa? Is it necessary to be so abysmally unselective? If so, the implication are truly spine-chilling.
