Mario Pissarra Makes Audience Cry (in a Good Way)

Tuesday, September 11, 2007

The thought of Mario Pissarra making an opening speech at the AVA would usually bring tears to the eyes of the most hardened art trooper but last night he did just this and it was not a bad thing. In a moving and intellectually challenging tribute to his late friend, Madi Phala, at a memorial exhibition at the AVA, South Africa's most race-conscious webmaster drew attention to the manner in which Phala had been typecast by theorists and curators over time and gave the few who listened an insight into the worldview of this often under-appreciated and certainly under-recognised artist. Phala was murdered on 2 June this year.

It was a pity that so few people attended this event, given the immense contribution that Phala made to the South African art scene and his dedication to the self-empowerment of local artists. If you were among those who did not pay tribute at the opening, make sure you catch this moving and significant show before it closes down.

Congratulations to the AVA for setting up this exhibition. It's good to know that there are still a few good women out there.

Thanks Anon

Also just to add that sales obviously go to family and support. And thanks to buyers.
