Sad Work. Andrzej Nowicki at What if the World...

Tuesday, July 31, 2007

I hadn't been to the new What if the World... space before, and I was impressed. It's a very professional looking space, with a nice hint of the industrial (there's a cool winch and pulley thing attached to a steel girder). Only problem is that 11 'o' clock openings do not suit, even if it does get the Market crowd in. I was there to take a look at Andrzej Nowicki's The Gloaming, a show of oils and watercolours. I really enjoyed the oils, they had a dark Neo Rauch feel to them, infused with a surreal espionage aesthetic. Never creepy, just sad and empty people going about their strange businesses and exchanges. I wasn't as convinced by the watercolours, which, in losing the monumental size of the oils, sank into being a bit more trendy Japanesey Internet Cartoonsy. Not that it makes them any less charming; they are saved by nice brushwork, and some surprising moments.
All in all, Nowicki is a painter to watch. I heard that the show sold out (although being What if the World... I wouldn't trust that the prices were anything near decent).

Congratulation Andrzei, for proving that Michaelis is in fact able to produce a decent artist, as apposed to tho Lamprecht-reared, Avant Garde for beginners lot. In ten years time you will have an illustrious career while they will still be single, trying and bickering amoungst themselves.

What do you mean the prices were nowhere near decent? For buyers, they were just right. For once I could purchase something just because it was totally the best work i'd seen in ages and feel completely good about it and not agonise over whether I'd made an 'investment', and not be totally broke afterwards. Next time he can clean up and charge triple and become stinking wealthy, but at least he gave us everyday people a chance to buy... I like it that what if the world isn't greedy. And I like painting too, so there.

Yeah it's great to be able to buy a cheap painting. But if you add up the time and resources it takes to make a body of work like that, the artist is actually paying you to own them, when he sells so cheaply. so it is not a viable system.

Someone should hit you on the head with a hammer, anonymous
the drawings aren't big enough..(tut tut Mr Sloone, a size man ?)
and they are cartooney and japanesey...prey please do tell...who these japaneseys are, I have been trawling the web for months looking for japaneseys just like this and never found any.

I found the drawings had hair raising frisson to them and the paintings texturaly repetitious. but if you are talking merely of content, you may be right.
