how delightfully trendy! This could have all the efervescence of a showing of flower prints. Why is VIDEO referred to as NEW MEDIA? Are we stuck with this label for eternity? Late, that is now very much dead, or deceased, artists were exhibiting video art in Cape Town in the early 1970's and the medium was pretty much the standard BOG in THE POT through much of the nineties.
I suppose that New Media (if it is to escape the fate of 'modern') has to refer to the evolving world of digital production which spans many media and disciplines.
Why does this bug me? I suppose if the tea is not hot I would rather it wasn't offered...

oops! Didn't read the flyer very well did I? Good , so they have separated Video & New Media. What else can I moan about? The layout & design: am I miss-reading this too? Is there some kind of ironic intention passing over my head... Rothman's Cigarettes, or a parade of royal Corgis?

You're right there about video art... we are all accustomed to the skillful use of the moving image from the billions of films we consume. It's insulting then when we are confronted with a the crap video art produces... shitty production, no tension, little imagination, no interest, just a smear of images.
And don't even get me started on the videos that document performance art.

what i hate is when artists take bits out of films that are already clever, ironic and/or meaningful etc etc and then re-present them as clever/ ironic/ meaningful statements. it's so tautological and undermines the fact that filmakers also have brains and intentions in the first place. it reminds me of the article in Art Times that describes the art thief cutting up Pierneef's to make them into new and original pieces. doff.

i never realised just how big a debate is going on about video and its problematic status as a reputable art medium. Last night at the african studies V-word presentation Adrew Lamprecht nailed video art and video artis to the cross with an extremely critical and engaging criticism. Its a pity that artists working in the medium are very inarticulate when coming to advocating for the validity of their craft....Thando Mama must learn how to speak for his work...his work is cryptical and it would help to hear his take on the whole black contemporaary video art masquarade...
