15 Minutes of Frame

Thursday, March 15, 2007

Since its postponement last year, the South African art world has waited with baited breath for the Transcape ‘not another biennale’, which now opens at the end of the month as 'Cape 07' in the form of a 'process driven' event with the entire city as a resource. Its rhetoric of transformation, and focus on African art and South African artist’s whose work speaks with an ‘African’ identity is impressive, but as yet remains to be seen. Transcape’s issues reflect the pressure on the South African art world to transform, where structures are often not put in place and only certain artists selected as ‘representative’. As such the work of art often becomes its ‘frame’, whether that be the particular labeling and discourse around the work, the race or gender of artist or curator, or the commodification of the artist’s signature style.

Doing it for Daddy will be setting up a roaming informal stall selectively set up outside official events for the duration of Cape '07 from which we will be selling new and secondhand picture frames. You are invited to sign, and customize if you wish, one of the frames in our ex-centric collection available on site. Alternatively you can contribute a frame you have made. These will be on offer as either a single edition or set, and sold to members of the public at a price agreed on by the organisers and the artist.

Doing it for Daddy is recently formed collective of artists, curators and critics who locate themselves somewhat outside of the ‘frame’. As yet, our collaborative project is unfunded and so the frames will be sold to cover costs. The entire process will be documented photographically. Transportation of frames to or from artists not in Cape Town can be arranged.
Everyone deserves their 15 minutes of frame!
