Trans Cape Artists
Thursday, July 27, 2006

Take a look at the announcement of artists for our own unbiennale. It seems interesting enough, if not a little safe. I would have liked to see more young South Africans, and at least a token white Capetonian. I do have a suspicion that the X-cape fringe exhibition will be more interesting, especially as it has Storm Janse van Rensburg at it's helm. By the way the deadline has been extended to the 15th August for submissions, so get your ass into gear. The online registration is here.

considering this is a show of usual suspects when it comes to the South African representatives there are some intriguing ommissions: locally....stephen cohen, zwelethu mthethwa, jane alexander, claudette and conrad, and ex...kendell geers, candice brietz, moshekwa langa..... hmmmmmm?
and the young white art: all just a pile of canned shite, quite clearly. only good enough for X-Cape. Is that a hint: "es-Cape" and be "X-Cape" whitey "X-Capists".
is wim botha the token young white person? does he count as young?
i spose you can also count Ina Van Zyl: maybe all young white south african artists should also leave as soon as possible after graduation and go live in Amsterdam or some other fashionable city in order to be shown at home. i can't believe i never thought of that. people must think i am crazy to ACTUALLY want to LIVE and WORK in south africa...
ok to be fair 2 young white artists (Botha and Van Zyl) is probably proportionally correct to the population breakdown. help me out here?
P.S. Michael stevenson's stable makes up nearly 1/6 of african art, if one analyses this list statistically: he truely is the Kahnweiler of the new age.
On the one hand a great opportunity for those of us who don't get to travel to catch up with work from the established names of contemporary african art.
On the other hand it can be seen as a Sell-Out Show ( with as many exclamation marks as you can afford). Sell-out as in Buy-in.
The (1) ArtDrectorForward SlashCurator and
(2) FundsPerson of the "Platform"" have managed to get Buy-In from not only Stevenson but Linda Givon & Monna Mokoena . 'Sno wonder their artists, white & black ( but shaped to fit the statistical demographics) make up the bulk of the SA cointingent. They also have B-I with Wits Fine Arts, and with the world wide Kentridge Fan club . The biggest losers would seem be Michaelis , and it is worth noting that Bertram House raher than Hiddingh Hall is one of the venues - perhaps it is interesting to note that the Michaelis Web Site does not list Gavin J. amongst it's Luminiferous Alumni....
can't cook an omelette without breaking the eggs - but it takes talent make it tasty.
