As an addendum to the news that Ruth won Absa, everyone might also be interested to know that the young student Nomusa Mary Makhuba won the Best Black Artist (I mean Gerard Sekoto) prize worth about R80 000 for her photography piece, Fragments (no, really). It seems that it's only ok to award edgy, contemporary, irreverent work when it's made by an edgy, irreverent white artist...

I liked Ruth's work on the Kebble, the consolation cups, and I liked her skywriting " Don't Panic. Haven't seen this "Fragments" . But too describe R's work as edgy, etc., is too much. It is merely , drearily, CONVENTIONAL, and that is I suspect what they were rewarding. Like, let's award the prizy too somethingEdgey this year.
I have too believe - my drowning straw - that anyone associated with these awards wouldn't recognise an EDGEY if it slunk up and bit them on the nipple...
