Ah, Miss Thandi has learned to spell.
Actually it is very funny and very true. A number of Black creatives in this country feel that they would be disrespecting their parents if they didn't choose to be graphic designers and bring home some cash rather than Fine Artists starving in garrets.
I for one had a hard time convincing my parents to allow me to study art when they had worked so hard at menial jobs in order to pay for my education.
Really, the lack of black artists in the visual arts has more to do with the social problems illustrated by this cartoon then some supposed continued racial bias by the powers that be.
I think more artists need to be addressing these concerns instead of making self centered identity based art works and winging about how hard it is to be represented.

I myself had a hard time convincing anyone to let me study art, even coming from a white middle class family. And the real issue here are social issues. Such as capitalism and poverty and the like. But I am sick and tired of people pushing the is it because I is black issue. People are being represented, but it is the intention that gets obscured. Art is a difficult one... for all.. and we are not in it for the money or the ladies...
As the cartoonist who dared to stick my neck out here, I am very heartened to see this discussion.
My parents are poor, they don't want me to be an artist, and I have to work for a living doing stuff I hate.
Never a truer word spoken in jest.......... hahahaha.....brilliant, when can I see the next one?
