3000 Miles to Jo'burg

Monday, June 05, 2006

Sometimes, when they're not butt-funnelling, rugby teams get it so right. I was sitting in Jo'burg Bar last night when 15 Elvisses walked in. They posed and shook their sequins, had some shooters and left for the next whisky bar. This is why Jo'burg is my favourite bar. But then I started to get nostalgic. I remember when Jo'burg was like an artistic hub. Every afternoon I would step in there and run into a gamut of artists and critics, anyone from Thembinkosi Goniwe drinking Black Labels to Julia Clark sipping on White Russians, or Sophie Perryer and Andrew Lamprecht tripping out on Absinthe. It seems that that culture of discourse by partying has faded. It might be since Bell-Roberts moved their gallery. Or maybe Cape Town art has become so bland that it doesn't put people into a party mood. There was the blip on the radar last year, with the Early Friday parties at Marvel, but that too has passed. Anyway, I would love to see this kind of thing be re-established. Jo'burg does do a half-price happy hour from 5-9 week days (and free food! like an artists soup kitchen), so maybe start making a turn, who knows what could come of it.

hold on, what do you mean free food? Like, proper food that you don't have to pay for?

No shame I'm in. especially 'cos there's alcohol. Driving home's gonna be loadsa fun, at least for other road users, the poor fuckers.
