We Love the Press

We managed to get our hands on this letter from art critic Melvyn Minnaar.

Subject: Disappearing arts

The Cape Times has informed me that, despite its increasing circulation,
it has severely cut its budget for 'outside contributors' like myself.

The effect is that the visual arts will, at most, get a once-a-week piece
from me.

With the visual arts - locally, probably at its most vibrant in decades -
already getting minor mainstream media attention, as you well know, this
is quite serious.

If you feel strongly, I suggest you write to the editor. (The arts editor,
who simply executes the orders, suggested as much.)

Our dynamic visual arts deserve better.

Regards

Melvyn Minnaar

Although we are a little uncertain about his writing at times, it does seem a little shocking that the pretty much only main stream media critic/writer on contemporary art is getting axed. All the worse for us. I remember when Sophie Perryer was art editor (or something) at the M&G there used to be two pages of art reviews. Now there's sometimes a quarter page, if that. These things just keep shrinking. Mr Minnaar if you want to write for Art Heat, you're more than welcome.

sad but surprisingly unsurprising. lets petition for more minnaar . let him not suffer the fate of other art critics and become a scooter's delivery man
