New Work by James Webb

Wednesday, May 31, 2006

James Webb is putting up a new untitled work at blank projects. While the gallery owners are away on holiday, he's programming the lights to flicker like there's faulty electricals. Meanwhile it's secretly spelling out a mystery message in morse. Sounds pretty cool. Just hope it works (we have a bad history in this city of works using electricity in clever ways never working). There's no opening, but you can bring your own wine and camp on the doorstep any night between 7th June and 15th July.

oh the tangled web. my lights flicker too, you can come see them anytime. the city council replaces them for free. I think there should be an art heat prize (free long life bulbs?) for the first person crazy enough to decifer james's (re)morse code.

Dear Jonothan the Jew, 2:57pm
Although we allow free commentary on this site, your Anti-Semitic remarks are unwelcome. I was going to censor your comment but that would be too much like book burning that your Nazi friends perpetrated.
Please find another place to leave your comments.

are you fucking joking? How is that anti semetic?

Associating Jews with making art, reading, modelling and having sex, especially in a secular sociey, is by no means anti-jewish. So ArtHeat, kudos for putting your cautionary message up, but please save it for when someone really needs cencoring. Perhaps you could explain why you think that Jon the Jew's comments were antisemetic?

Perhaps you issued this statement due to sensitivity regarding the feeling of the authentic Jonathan?

Dear Marco
I had complaints about the comment. Sometimes there is a fine line between what is harmless fun and what is not. I don’t know where this line is so rather than removing the offending comment I prefer to encourage discourse around it. Isn’t that what it means to be living in a happy and positive democracy? What do you think it means to label someone by their religion in a secular society? Is calling someone a Nazi any better?

Dear Robert.

Why would I spell my own name incorrectly? Although I do agree with "Marco FilbEy's" argument that my comments under the pseudonym "Jonathon The Jew" were not at all anti-semitic.

"i'm a jew, a model, i read books, i make art...lets have sex!!!"
???

These statements are all factual and in no way derogatory.

If i had said that I hate Jews then i could understand your concern, but the fact is that i didn't! Some of my best friends happen to be Jewish and i recently attended Shabbat with my friend Jared. I think you are somehow drawing over eager censorship conclusions based not only on my comments as "Jonathan" but rather, based also on Tim and my 'Our Mein Kampf' post, which i think might be read incorrectly as being fascist and anti-semitic.
Which, it is not!!!
To quote my good friend Tim: "You see, the decision to use a phrase with connotations to a moustachoid catalyst of genocide was made solely for the purpose of piquing curiosity. The fact that you read the article indicates that it was successful in its intent. Anyone with basic grade two level reading ability would soon have noted that the actual works had nothing to do with nazism at all. You are akin to the fundamentalists providing the Da Vinci code with immeasurable free publicity because they're pretty sure that they should be offended. For some reason Taboo stuff encourages the brain to release an enzyme that prompts it (the brain) to shut itself down."

I think your comments, although extremely polite were quite uncalled for and you should in future perhaps put a warning up, stating that you are not responsible for what other people choose to post.

"Perhaps you issued this statement due to sensitivity regarding the feeling of the authentic Jonathan?" Marco Filbey
...Yes?

Jonathan happens to be one of my friends. So...Jon...i am sorry if I offended you!
...and I am also sorry to whoever else i offended...sorry that you are so sensitive and closed minded.

Love
Marco Filby

Dear Real Marco,
You'll notice that the comment wasn't censored. Thanks for your reply. I agree with lots of your points. Nevertheless, surely you'll agree that working as an editor requires one to deal with any potential problems, rather than not take responsibility? Anyway, I hope you enjoyed shabbat.
Robert
