Khwezi Gule and the 'quest for the best'

Saturday, May 13, 2006

Poor Khwezi Gule. We always thought he would become one of the hottest young South African curators. Recent events seem to prove us wrong. Like the MTN new contemporaries award. ArtHeat received the following information from a reliable anonymous source:

The MTN New Contemporaries Award is unique in that it is unsolicited by the artists it honours: it evolves from a shortlist of emerging artists drawn up by a curator, a 'specialist in contemporary art'. 2006's curator is Johannesburg Art Gallery Contemporary Collections Curator and art practitioner Khwezi Gule. Over the course of a number of months, Gule visited studios across SA in 'a quest for the best', specifically seeking new talent that would 'jettison old stereotypes'. Gule's shortlist was then submitted to an independent judging committee, which selected the winner. This year's judges were cultural producer and curator Zayd Minty, curator and writer Melissa Mboweni, provincial chairman for the Visual arts Network of South Africa Nathi Gumede, Director of the Johannesburg Art Gallery Clive Kellner, and MTN Art Collection curator Philippa Hobbs.

So does anybody know if Khwezi's tireless quest extended further than a few emails?

From other sources we also learnt that many of the artists were extremely unhappy with the exhibition. Maybe it's just because they didn't win. But if Kwezi did not manage this relatively small exhibition, what will he do with a large-scale "not another" biennale? Do we wait or do we start crying in advance?

I think Kwezi and Gabi are just being used by Mr Gavin Jantjes to pull of his show, as if Gabi or Kwezi is going to have a say in anything with Cape. And for Mr Jantjes get a life, you are nothing but an old fart from the UK speaking about rolerskating meaning skateboarding. He speaks for hours and say nothing, who thought he was a good idea? It could only be Emma Bedford. Im mean this man pretend not to understand kaaps, Bring him to the flats I say, or is he to dainty?
