Finally Something To Look Forward to at the AVA

Tuesday, May 23, 2006

Max Wolpe (as in the Max we all know and love) is having a show at the AVA which opens on Monday, 29th May. Apparently it's of drawings and paintings from his recent trip to England - maybe that's where he was during his recent opening hiatus , I thought he'd just finally given up on the Cape Town galleries for good.

Anyway, as far as I'm concerned this is definitely the most anticipated show at the AVA since the committee stopped letting Andrew curate exhibitions there.

Speaking of which, does anyone have any ideas as to who's getting Estelle's job next year? We've all heard a few rumors, though very few that sound like an even vaguely good idea. C'mon Storm, take one for Cape Town - no really I swear this committee will be totally different to your last one, really lovely, contemporary-minded, reasonable people.

Failing that I guess there's always Lynette Bester....

i really like max's paintings. slightly all over the place but in a cy twomblyish way. and humorous. there was a great one of soccer hooligans on show at the AVA a few years ago - i am still pissed off with myself for not buying it. I wonder if his work intentionally pokes fun at his father's generation of painters and collectors? he still uses those kinda bloomsbury group hues, and washy mushy brushstrokes like papa but the subject matter is, as I recall, far more rough and tough. a little rebel, old max? i back Ms. Scarlet on this one: let's all go...see if we can top Ed's opening record of 800? people (it was prob more) at the Bellie's Asshole. Maybe Max will be the new Ed and vice versa?

800 people at asshole? I thought it was 8,000. I'm sure Max can draw 10,000. His paintings are much nicer than Picasso's and that old bastard apparently just drew 100,000.

Max should get Estelle's job. Let's petition this. He knows the gallery and the Cape Town art scene like the back of his gland. He's the man for the job. Accept no substitutes.

Max is in a whole other league to Ed. Ed wishes he could see the world like Max. But he cant. Ed just thinks about his penis.
